each 4th Sunday, the soon-to-be-graduating laurels are invited to attend Relief Society during the 3rd hour of church. today we had a lesson on the first two, and the greatest, commandments from the Lord. it was a really great lesson! I really can't wait to be able to go all the time! but today there was a quote from President Monson that totally caught my attention..
"Let us have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle. Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God's approval. Courage becomes a living and an attractive virtue when it is regarded not only as a willingness to die manfully, but as the determination to live decently. A moral coward is one who is afraid to do what he thinks is right because others will disapprove or laugh. Remember that all men have their fears, but those who face their fears with dignity have courage as well." -Thomas S. Monson
courage is something we, as a society, have been greatly lacking in the past few years. there are very few people we see standing up for what they believe in. I find that these people hold back from sharing what they believe because they do not want to offend and anger others. this makes me think back to why America was created on the base of morals that it was. look at the first amendment: freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly, and petition. we are meant to have these freedoms. we are meant to have the ability to speak freely, and to be open about what we believe. yet, lately, we are shying away from being courageous in this ever-changing world. we are very aware of those around us and what they think, but we don't want to offend them; so, of course, we just refrain from standing up for what we believe in or what we think to be true. but why? how are we to make a difference if we do not stand up for and share what we believe? when we are truly convinced that something is true and we firmly believe in it, we should never shy away from sharing it with others(emphasis on the word sharing..it is not forcing our beliefs on others). we should not be cowards, we should be courageous in our actions dealing with our beliefs!
remember the words from President Monson: "those who face their fears with dignity have courage as well."
be believing. be truthful. be courageous.
love, megs. :)
